Description
The House of Knowledge is a vision of the Port Gamble S'Klallam people. It is a village of learning composed of a Longhouse, a Career and Education Department, an Elder Center, a Carving Workshop, and a new Library.

The traditional longhouse, which had not been seen on the reservation in more than a century, is at the center of the complex and provides a place for important tribal gatherings. The longhouse utilizes tradition log-pole construction with exposed framing. This unique log structure combines the tradition of longhouse construction with modern architecture. The interior is filled with natural light from the full span glass at ceiling level.

The focal point of the building is the massive rolling doors that were hand carved by tribal members. The doors tell a story of traditional life on the reservation. The timber used to make the doors came from old growth cedar that required a special permit to harvest.
